What are the techniques of dog training the most fundamental and important?

og training skills that most people want to do with your dog or puppy how to come to teach him. This command is very important to learn for each dog. An obedient dog if the owner is called to stay away from any more potential problems. They nfl jerseys
can to prevent it from entering into fights with other dogs, kids scary, it's in a situation, dirty if you do not want, and can often away from the road and out of danger, as one at the right have called time. It seems that this basic capability of the dog training is a very simple thing to is to teach your dog. However, there are many reasons why dogs and puppies do not want to leave everything, is it worth what they were doing and come to you when you call. They love to explore and visit the fascinating aromas found that with a walk. This means that the dog to come teach each time, instead, you must create some kind of reward only if they nothing better to do. The idea of Bears jersey
rewarding the dog for the correct behavior is common to all the basics of dog training. The main types of rewards that can be used with a dog is a form of praise or other positive attention and treats. From the basic dog training that you minimize distractions so that your puppy understands the relationship can come to you when you call and treat me. Less distractions you have, the faster you will learn that these two events happen not think so by accident. The best way is to begin his training at home on a deal to say in which no one nearby. You can praise begin, it is a pleasure.
When he heard that Come or Come here means that it must come to you, you can move the external training. One could be useful to begin by the long leash. This will avoid as far as you go is not clearly heard. If you have learned the skill, you can stop treatment. But never stop praise. Although she is 20 years his praise was always coming to you when you call.
Make sure to get only the reward in this particular way, when called, do not come to you on other occasions. You must be responsible. Remember that the dog does not have a long attention span for most things. Lessons should be short, so the dog does not get bored or frustrated. These are all important techniques of dog training.
Another thing to consider is the sound of Bills jersey
his voice. Used to go to the dogs with a deep voice or increased if they try to talk to form.
This is not great because the dog think you are angry before they begin. This training is stressful for them. So try one of the regular voice of the majority of the time, if you use begin with the basic dog training.

Bayern extends coach Louis van Gaal’s contract

Cowboys jersey
BERLIN (AP)—Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal signed a one-year contract extension on Monday in a sign of the club’s confidence in the Dutchman following a poor start to the German champions’ title defense.
Van Gaal joined Bayern last season and led the team to the Bundesliga and German Cup double, as well as the Champions League final.
Bayern said Van Gaal signed the extension, which will keep him nfl jerseys
at the club through to June 2012, after the squad arrived in Switzerland for Tuesday’s Champions League match against FC Basel.
The extension offers Van Gaal support after a stumbling start that has left Bayern ninth in the Bundesliga, with eight points from six matches. On Saturday, Bayern lost 2-1 at home to surprise leader Mainz, which is 10 points ahead of the defending champions.
“I always prefer to do things that people perhaps don’t expect,” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.
“Anyone can extend contracts after a victory. So it is a very good public signal that now, after the defeat against Mainz, we continue to appreciate the value of the coach.”
Bayern said a one-year extension was what Van Gaal wanted.
“He does a super job, day in, day out,” Rummenigge said. “And we rewarded that Chicago Bears jersey
with the contract extension.”
Bayern vice captain Philipp Lahm said the players were pleased with the move.
“We have seen how meticulously the coach works and what progress we have made,” the Germany defender said.
Bayern’s wobbly start came after the club decided against reinforcing its squad during the offseason transfer window. It has since lost several prominent players to injury.
In its latest setback, the club will be without defender Diego Contento for up to six weeks following a groin operation at the weekend.
The team’s two star wingers were already out injured—France’s Franck Ribery faces a several weeks off and the Netherlands’ Arjen Robben is unlikely to play before the winter break.
Rummenigge said he is content with the decision not to buy new players.
“We made that decision with the coach, and we stand by it,” Rummenigge New Orleans Saints jersey
was quoted as saying in an interview with the daily Bild published Monday.
“Robben and Ribery can’t be replaced with players of equal value,” he said, adding that “our (German) national team players must step up.”

Cowboys vs. Bears Dallas Trying To Rebound From Opening Loss

GAME SET
WHAT: Dallas Cowboys (0-1) vs. Chicago Bears (1-0)
WHEN: Sunday, noon (CT)
WHERE: Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas
TELEVISION: FOX (Joe Buck, Troy Airman and Pam Oliver)
BIG ISSUE: Five days have passed since the Cowboys fell to the Redskins in heartbreaking fashion, and it seems like just now the football world is nfl throwback jerseys
getting over the loss. Quarterback Tony Room said he's moved on. And so did head Coach Wade Phillips. But still, the only way Dallas and its fans can truly put last Sunday's defeat in the rearview mirror is with a win in the team's home opener.
Unlike the Cowboys, the Bears are undefeated. And they somehow found a way to avoid a heartbreaker last Sunday when they got a Calvin Johnson last-minute touchdown catch overturned. But this weekend, what happened in Week 1 doesn't matter. The Bears still have issues on the offensive line and still have a quarterback who led the league in interceptions last season. They'll head into Sunday's game looking to prove they're actually a contender.
NUMBERS, PLEASE: The Cowboys have a shipload of Pro Bowlers, playmakers and ball hawkers on their defense, but they can never seemingly get that one turnover when they need it the most. Last season they only tallied 11 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries on defense, combining for 21 takeaways, the 27th-most in the league. On Sunday against the Redskins, they did get one interception, but, of course, it was wiped out because of a penalty. So the 2010 Cowboys head into Week 2 with zero takeaways.
Luckily for the Cowboys, they get to face Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, one of the most turnover-prone players in the NFL. Cutler threw a pick last weekend against the Lions. Last season, he threw a league-high 26. He also had a fumble against Detroit, and had nine last seasons as well. If the Cowboys can't find a way to make Cutler turn the football over, they might not be able to make anybody turn over the ball.
ONE-ON-ONE: The matches everybody will be following on Sunday will of course be Bears defensive ends Julius Peppers and Mark Anderson against Cowboys tackles Doug Free and Marc Colombo. But looking closer at the Bears defense, Jason Written against the Bears linebackers is the one-on-one to watch for. The Lions didn't exactly light up the Bears on Sunday - they only compiled 168 yards - but tight ends Tony Schaffer and Brandon Pettigrew combined for seven catches and 49 yards. If the Bears choose to leave the middle of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the field open this Sunday, Written could have one of his trademark monster games.
Since his rookie season when he posted 1,238 rushing yards, Bears running back Matt Forte has not been a very good running back. Last year, he carried the ball 258 times for 929 yards (3.6 yards per carry). Against the Lions last week, he carried the ball 17 times for 50 yards (2.9 yards per carry). However, he's been a fantastic receiving back for the Bears. The Lions had no answer for Forte out of the backfield last week; he posted 151 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches. One of the Cowboys linebackers or safeties is going to have to keep a close eye on him out of the backfield if they want to avoid that same stat line.
SUPPORTING ROLE: If people had been able to get past all the pandemonium and hoopla that surrounded last weekend's wild finish against the Redskins, they would have seen how well the Cowboys actually ran the ball against Washington. On 22 carries, the Cowboys rushed for 103 yards, a 4.7 average. But with starting fullback Deon Anderson expected to miss this weekend's game with a knee injury, the Cowboys will turn to fullback Chris Gronkowski to pave the way for running backs in the hole.
Bears kicker Robbie Gould won't throw catch or run for any touchdowns against the Cowboys, but he'll certainly be a factor. It would've taken eight points to beat the Cowboys last week. That's just three Gould field goals - and he's very good at making those. Last season, Gould made 24 of his 28 attempts. Against the Lions on Sunday, he was 2-for-2. He's also a good kickoff man, posting one touchback in Week 1. Steelers jersey

HEADSET GAMES: Everything is going to be about protecting the quarterback this week. Marc Colombo and Kyle Kosher are expected to return to the starting lineup, but nobody knows how effective they'll be after sitting out a month with knee injuries. So the Cowboys are going to have to get creative when trying to block Peppers and Anderson for 60 minutes on Sunday. Phillips said he'd like to rotate in guard Montréal Holland and tackle Alex Barron, and one would have to imagine tight ends and backs will stay in to help some against a Bears' pass rush that recorded two sacks against the Lions.
The Bears, meanwhile, will have the same problem as the Cowboys. Indianapolis Colts jersey
Their offensive line gave up four sacks last week to a Detroit defense that doesn't have Demarks Ware or Anthony Spencer. They'll have to keep in a tight end or running back if they want to keep Cutler upright, or that could mean leaving receiving dynamo Forte in the backfield.

Jets owner: Edwards let team down

Dallas Cowboys jersey
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson told Baryon Edwards that the star wide receiver's arrest for drunken driving Tuesday morning disappointed the team and him.
''I just shared with him my feelings,'' Johnson said Thursday. ''I told him exactly what I'm telling you: 'this is not acceptable, Baryon. I'm disappointed. You let yourself down. You let the team down.'''
Edwards was arraigned on drunken-driving charges Tuesday after a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when he was stopped on Manhattan's West Side, prosecutors said. Edwards apologized to the team, fans and his family on Wednesday.
''This is a serious thing to be accused of, nfl jersey
so I'm sorry that it happened to one of our guys,'' Johnson said, addressing the issue publicly for the first time. ''Particularly when we've done a lot to address this particular issue because it does occur in professional sports, as it does in real life.''
Johnson said he has spoken to Edwards ''three or four times'' since the incident and the wide receiver has shown remorse. The team determined that Edwards would be active for New York's next game Sunday night against Miami, but how much he plays would be up to Coach Rex Ryan.
Ryan would not comment on the matter Thursday, but said he had a good idea of how much Edwards would play.
Due to the rules of the collective bargaining agreement, any punishment the Jets would dole out, other than what the NFL eventually decides, could violate the CBA. That means the Jets could not suspend or deactivate him without risking a violation. Keeping Edwards active and not playing him could also be perceived as punishment.
''He's not going to start and I think it's about as a significant thing as you can do to a starter, a guy that considers himself in that respect,'' Johnson said.
He added that the Jets looked into previous similar cases before making their decision, saying there is no precedent to take a stand and deactivate a player.
''That's about as severe an action as I've seen,'' Johnson said. ''Most teams have let the legal process take place. This has happened before. We hope it doesn't happen again here or elsewhere, for that matter.''
Two of Edwards' teammates, left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and defensive Chargers jersey
end Vernon Gholson, were in the car at the time of the arrest. Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum met with those players, and decided no punishment would be dealt.
Gholson said no one else in the car offered to drive, and added that ''to my knowledge'' Edwards did not seem impaired.
''I think their perception was that everything was OK, I guess,'' Johnson said. ''That's what I heard.''
Johnson also responded to criticism from fans and media that Edwards is getting off easy by the team by only losing a start.
''He's losing a lot more than that,'' Johnson said. ''First of all, we don't know if he's losing it, but he's got a serious ticket in front of him and if proven guilty he's got a serious taint on his record. He's going to be a free agent at some point. I would guess if he's convicted of this, this is not going to be helpful. So I think he's got a heavy load in front of him.''
It is the latest negative incident for a team that has Super Bowl aspirations and starred on HBO's ''Hard Knocks'' this summer. The Jets were investigated by the NFL last week for their treatment of a female television reporter, and Johnson must underwrite a workplace conduct program the league is developing for all 32 teams.
Ryan scolded the team in a meeting before practice Wednesday, telling them that they all - including himself - need to stop embarrassing Johnson and the organization.
''You know, embarrassing would not be the way I would characterize it,'' Johnson said. ''It's sadder, rather than embarrassed. This type of thing doesn't represent who we are or who I want us to be and who Rex wants us to be. This is not the goal we're striving for.''
Johnson added the Jets will not tolerate drinking and driving, and cited that it Bears jersey
has the Player Protect program in place that offers transportation to players free of charge and with confidentiality.
''I think we're just beginning,'' Johnson said. ''We're going to push this as hard as we can push it. There's no tolerance for point-anything alcohol level if you're driving. Zero. I don't want any drinking and driving. That's my personal goal and that's what I'm going to tell them.''

24 sep 10 Near misses aren’t good enough for Rams

Is it too early for the Rams to be facing a "must win" situation against the Redskins at home this Sunday?
Hell no.
No matter how close they come, the Rams are football jersey
still losing. Week after week, even against weak opponents like the Raiders.
Close just doesn't cut it anymore, especially considering the disappearing acts on both sides of the ball in the second halves of both the Rams' losses so far this season.
Last Sunday in Oakland, the Raiders adjusted at halftime by deciding to send eight men in the box after Steven Jackson, who had 67 yards on 14 carries in the first half and looked like he was on his way to a monster outing. The Rams' offense countered by retreating into the same bland shell that it has been in more often than not under the direction of coordinator Pat Shurmur.
The Rams gained only 12 yards in the third quarter against Oakland. Granted, their weapons on offense are limited, with the lack of an outside threat being especially apparent in Week Two.
But 12 yards in the third quarter is pathetic.
That the Rams made both the Cardinals and Raiders sweat big-time bullets is no longer some sort of consolation. Both the Cardinals and Raiders were eminently beatable. But the Rams just keep losing, 27 of their last 28 games.
I still think there's a lot to like about Rams head coach Steve Steelers jersey
Spagnuolo, but in my mind his grace period is over.
With four of their first six games at home, a couple of early victories in that span could work wonders for the team as a drawing card that's genuinely worth the hefty price of admission at pro football games these days.
The Rams can beat the Redskins, who allowed the Texans to score the final 20 points in their overtime loss to Houston in Week Two.
The Rams know something about self-destruction. They've already turned it into an art form this season, and there isn't even any frost on the ground yet.
One other thing before signing off: Show me the blitzes!
After blitzing like crazy against the Cardinals — a standard tactic Spagnuolo capitalized on as the highly successful defensive coordinator of the Giants — the Rams' defense opted for a much more passive approach against the Raiders.
Enough with all this timidity. The Rams need to be bolder on Vikings jersey
both sides of the ball. Much bolder. They need to start being the team that makes adjustments that make a difference instead of always being the victim.
They need to show some creativity and be the aggressors. After all, what do they have to lose — except just another game?

TCU players being reminded of SMU loss 5 years ago

Steelers jersey
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—TCU players are being reminded this week about a loss five years ago even though none of them were part of that game.
A week after opening the 2005 season with a victory at Oklahoma, the Horned nfl jersey
Frogs were a heavy favorite the next week—and lost 21-10 at SMU, their only loss that season.
While fourth-ranked TCU (3-0) has won nine of the last 10 games in the Dallas-Fort Worth rivalry known for its unique “Iron Skillet” trophy, Patterson is pointing out the lone loss of that span heading into Friday’s night’s game at SMU (2-1).
“This is the first year we don’t have somebody that was part of that game,” Patterson said Tuesday. “They haven’t been a part of it, but I can tell you this much, I’ll show the celebration part of the game on video to all of them of how it looked.”
There were DVD copies of the game sold by SMU after its big upset.
“I guess it was a big deal,” Patterson said.
TCU is coming off a 45-10 victory last weekend over Baylor, another instate rival the Frogs have played less often since they were all still in the Southwest Conference together 15 years ago.
“Second week of emotional games,” Patterson said.
While TCU played Baylor for only the third time since the SWC ended, there has only been one season without a Frog and Pony show.
Since 2000, TCU has beaten the Mustangs eight times by an average margin of Saints jersey
four touchdowns. Then there is that lone setback, one that might have cost the Frogs a chance to be a BCS buster four years earlier than they finally were last season.
“If we lose Friday night, nobody will remember the others, I promise you,” Patterson said. “Not many people around TCU have forgotten the 2005 loss, and we’ve beaten them a few times since then.”
SMU has won five consecutive home games, their longest stretch since 1986. The Mustangs have won both home games this season, including 35-21 over Washington State last weekend for their first win over a team from a conference with an automatic BCS bid since 2000.
This is the final non-conference game for TCU, which is playing all four of its September games in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Frogs opened the season with a win over Oregon State at Cowboys Stadium, then played two home games before the 45-mile trip across the Metroplex.
“It means a lot to us, but I think we’re more worried about just it being the next game on the schedule,” tight end Evan Frosch said. “We strive to have a perfect season every year, and we can’t have a perfect season if we don’t win the next game.”
That is what makes the game against SMU so important, more so than the rivalry that dates back to 1915.
And for the current players, all they have known is success against the San Diego Chargers jersey
Mustangs. TCU won 39-14 last year and in its last game on the SMU campus won 48-7 in 2008.
What about that 2005 loss?
“It’s rarely brought up around here, especially among the players,” safety Tejay Johnson said. “We’re going into the last nonconference game. We’re just focusing on getting better going into conference play.”

No. 10 Razorbacks have fresh confidence this year

Steelers jersey
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino had no intention of playing for overtime. Neither did the rest of the No. 10 Razorbacks.
After surrendering a 14-point, fourth-quarter lead at Georgia on Saturday, Arkansas forced a key stop and got the ball back on its own 27 with 47 seconds remaining and the game tied at 24-24. Petrino said the distance didn’t bother him, and neither did the lack of time—not when the two-minute, no-huddle nfl throwback jerseys
offense is something the Razorbacks work on nearly every week in practice.
“I think every player out there did believe when we got the ball, we would go score,” Petrino said.
Arkansas (3-0, 1-0 SEC) did just that, and it did so in only three plays, all completions by quarterback Ryan Mallett to three different receivers. The last was to junior receiver Greg Childs, who sidestepped a Georgia defender and raced 40 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 15 seconds remaining.
“I’m not really sure what the safety was thinking, but he was thinking the wrong thing,” Childs said when asked whether the Bulldogs safety might have thought he would go out of bounds after the catch. “I had something else on my mind, and he had something else on his.”
The drive cemented a spot in the Heisman Trophy discussion for Mallet, who leads the nation in passing yards per game (359.3) and has thrown nine touchdowns and just two interceptions. It was a breakthrough moment for the junior quarterback who struggled in SEC road games last year, completing only 39 percent of his passes as the Razorbacks finished 0-4.
The win also couldn’t have come at a better time for Arkansas, which faces its toughest test of the season when it hosts No. 1 Alabama (3-0) on Saturday. It’s the first time two Top 10 teams have met in Fayetteville since 1979.
“Just to get a win in the SEC on the road is big-time, especially going into Bills jersey
Alabama at home,” Mallett said. “We wanted to carry that momentum into this game, and that’s what we did. Last year was a whole different story, and that was a different team. This year, it’s a more mature team and we’re excited about it.”
Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy said the Razorbacks would benefit from the close win.
“I think you do have to win games like that,” he said. “I think you look at Auburn’s game (with Clemson), you look at Arkansas’ game, sometimes you just squeak out of games. Maybe games that you shouldn’t have won, maybe games that you should have won and you just didn’t make the plays necessary to really blow a team out.
“Those are the things about championship-caliber teams, they have the mindset. They’re able to bounce back when adversity is staring them in the face. The fact that both of those teams were able to do that really speaks volumes about the way they’re able to prepare.”
Neither Mallett nor Arkansas looked ready for a big game last year in a 35-7 loss at Alabama. The Crimson Tide held Mallett to just 12 of 35 passing for 160 yards, outgaining the Razorbacks 425-254 in total yardage.
“We felt like it was a big learning experience for us,” Petrino said. “We didn’t execute the way we normally do, and I felt like it was because when we stepped on the field, we didn’t truly believe that we could beat them.”
Petrino said Arkansas learned from that loss, pointing to close 49ers jersey
road losses to Florida and LSU later last season as examples. Since a loss to Ole Miss on the road last season, the Razorbacks have won eight of nine.
“It’s a real good opportunity,” Arkansas junior cornerback Isaac Madison said of facing Alabama. “It gives the world the chance to see the type of football team we have, how we’ve matured, how we can keep our composure and play with those guys.”

Slaughter expected to start at safety for Irish

Steelers jersey
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Notre Dame safety Jamoris Slaughter is expected to start against Stanford on Saturday after missing one game and another start with a sprained ankle.
Slaughter is “moving much better,” Irish coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday. football jerseys
Slaughter missed the Michigan game after spraining his ankle in the season opener against Purdue, and came off the bench in last weekend’s overtime loss at Michigan State.
Also, Notre Dame has notified the NCAA that defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Mike Elston has returned to the staff. Elston missed the Michigan game and did not coach against Michigan State after being hospitalized with a viral illness, and his responsibilities were covered by other members of Chargers jersey
Kelly’s staff.
“I’m going to be with the team the rest of the season. That’s what the expectation is,” Elston said after Notre Dame’s practice Tuesday.
Elston said he didn’t want to go into much detail about the illness, but said he first began feeling its effects Aug. 2. Kelly had said earlier that Elston gave at least 72 vials of blood as doctors tried to get a handle on the illness, and Elston said they also also took bone marrow.
“I went through an unbelievable amount of poking and prodding and Bears jersey
taking blood,” Elston said. “But it was necessary.”
Asked if he was feeling completely healthy again, Elston said, “I’m getting there, yeah.”

Damon nixes Sox move;Chooses to stay in Detroit

Steelers jersey
Leave it to the original Idiot to make a decision that left nearly everyone in baseball scratching their heads.
The allure of spending the rest of his summer in Detroit proved irresistible to Johnny Damon, who announced yesterday that he would block a trade to the Red Sox.
''I don't plan on waiving (the no-trade clause),'' Damon told the football jerseys
Detroit Free Press before the Tigers' game last night. ''Initially, I thought long and hard about it, but after going around and talking to a bunch of my teammates, they want me here. And they feel we can make a strong push, at least make this (AL) Central race interesting. That's why I'm going to stay.
''I've said all along I love playing for Detroit, for the city, for the fans. These guys really like me here.''
The Red Sox liked the idea of having Damon's still potent left-handed bat atop their lineup enough to make a waiver claim on him Monday. They were fully aware that Damon might exercise his no-trade clause, just as they knew that making a claim would block any move by their AL East rivals, the Rays and the Yankees, to claim him.
For the Red Sox, it was a win-win situation. For Damon, it put the sensitive and likable outfielder through a great deal of mental anguish. A fan favorite here from 2002-05, when he set the tone for the Idiots' 2004 World Series run, Damon became a target for boo-birds for four years after he decided to accept a more lucrative and longer free agent offer from the Yankees.
Damon brought up his exit and subsequent treatment in Boston once the waiver claim became public.
His ex-teammates were disappointed by his decision but seemed to Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
understand.
''I said it before, I'll say it again: Playing with Johnny, the way he plays the game, the way he goes about his business, it would have been a welcome visit to have him back here,'' said captain Jason Varitek. ''It would have been a big addition to our team with what he can be.''
David Ortiz, like Varitek, made phone calls to Damon urging him to come. They didn't make a difference. ''He's a grown man,'' said Ortiz. ''He had to talk to his family and figure things out before he made a move, and that's what he did.''
Ortiz said he was lifted by the thought of Damon returning.
''Yeah, yeah, I was happy,'' said Ortiz. ''He was my old teammate and to see him back in a Red Sox uniform would have been great.''
Manager Terry Francona declined to comment about Damon's decision, citing being fined for tampering. Harkening back to Rays manager Joe Maddon's comments Monday that he hoped Damon would not come to the Sox, Francona did quip, ''I think Joe Maddon's allowed to (comment) but I'm not. I'm trying to figure that out.''
Damon spent yesterday afternoon meeting with Tigers' staff to make sure he would not be sitting on the bench the rest of the season. He has just a one-year deal, but he sounded genuinely dead-set on making every effort to return to Detroit for 2011.
''The tough thing about it is there are no guarantees of where I'll be next year,'' said Damon. ''As much as I would love to be back here next year, that's something the team doesn't really decide on until possibly the offseason. I'm OK with it.
''I know going to Boston probably could have helped out my free agency, but so be it. Minnesota Vikings jersey
I felt like, when we started this season, this team was all together in our thought process. We're going to win and lose together. We're going to continue that. We're going to go out there and keep playing hard. These kids are going to keep learning and, hopefully, we can keep going.''

Mom's condition helps spur early retirement

Steelers jersey
The toll of his mother's failing health, a losing season and a difficult personal decision to leave his last baseball season early were etched on Lou Piniella's tearful face.
''A lot of good times, good people ... it's been a lot of nfl jerseys
fun,'' the Cubs manager said in his last news conference Sunday.
''This will be the last time I put on the uniform,'' he said, choking back tears. ''It's been very special.''
Hours before the Cubs' 16-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves, Piniella announced Sunday's game would be his last. He made the decision Saturday night after several heart-to-heart meetings with general manager Jim Hendry about the declining health of his 90-year-old mother, Margaret. Her condition, which has worsened in recent days, made Piniella decide to step aside now instead of at the end of the season, as he had announced in July.
''It's not fair to the team, the players,'' he said. ''My mother hasn't gotten better. In fact, there have been a couple other complications. The best thing is to step down and go home and take care of her.''
Piniella's unexpected decision was followed by another surprise. Hendry chose third-base coach Mike Quade instead of bench coach Alan Trammell to finish the season as manager. Hendry made the choice because Trammell will not be a candidate to manage next season; Quade will be. Trammell managed the team during several absences by Piniella this season.
''Alan's terrific and an outstanding coach,'' said Hendry, who told Colts jersey
Trammell on Sunday morning. ''The last few weeks I've made the decision Alan won't be a candidate for the managerial job. He understood. The decision I made is if he wasn't going to be the manager, we'd be better served not having him be managing the rest of the year.''
Quade, 53, a Mount Prospect native, has spent almost a decade with the organization, managing in the farm system before joining Piniella's staff in 2007.
''You thank Jim and the front office and the Ricketts family for giving me the opportunity,'' Quade said. ''Probably first and foremost, I should thank Lou because without him, I mean, my life is in a whole different place, probably.''
Hendry said the rest of the coaching staff will remain, with first-base coach Ivan DeJesus moving to third base. Trammell, who managed the Detroit Tigers, remains the bench coach, and a roving minor-league instructor will be added to the staff.
''I don't have a front-runner,'' Hendry said of the next manager. ''I said I would take a long, extended amount of time and do what I thought was best for our organization. There isn't a leading candidate. Mike deserves this opportunity, and I hope he handles it well.''
Piniella's final game came against manager Bobby Cox, who will retire after the season. The two exchanged lineup cards and hugs at home plate before the game, and Cox acknowledged the cheers.
The applause for Piniella was the deeper gesture. He called it a touching tribute.
''I noticed things around the park I hadn't noticed before,'' Piniella said of his last day. ''I was very cognizant of the things around here.
''It's a good day to remember, and also forget,'' he added with a smile, noting the score.
''I don't think when you come here as an outsider you Cowboys jersey
realize what you're getting into -- and it's good. We've raised the bar a little. The fans get into it here. It's probably the most fun place in major-league baseball.
''I hope in the very near future they can get a team here to give the fans what they want.''

Starting out in a big hole isn't a good playoff trait;DIAMONDBACKS 11, GIANTS 3

Steelers jersey
The Giants had a guest public-address announcer Saturday night. What they really needed was former NFL coach Jim Mora to commandeer the microphone and scream, "Playoffs?!!! Playoffs?!!!"
In the standings, the Giants are well within striking distance of cheap nfl jerseys
the postseason. On the field, the story is completely different.
How can anyone utter the word "playoffs" when the Giants drop a late-August home series to a last-place team? That was assured with their 11-3 loss to Arizona.
How can a pitching-oriented team even think of the postseason when the starters become an albatross? In a losing streak that has reached three games, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito have surrendered four, three and six runs in the first inning, respectively, dropping the Giants into deep pits before they bat one time.
The rotation has five wins in an 11-14 August. That has to change, and pronto, a message that manager Bruce Bochy relayed in a postgame meeting with Zito, Lincecum, Bumgarner and Jonathan Sanchez. Matt Cain was not present, having gone home early because he pitches today. He is the one starter consistently doing his job anyway.
Bochy was still steaming after he let the starters have it.
"We deserve it," Zito said after he allowed nine runs two unearned in 3 2/3 innings, the eighth time in 125 Giants starts he has surrendered at least seven earned but first time in 2010.
Zito is 0-6 with a 5.51 ERA in eight starts plus one inning of Steelers jersey
relief since he last won July 16.
In a first inning that can only be described as hideous, Zito threw 38 pitches, faced 11 hitters and allowed six runs on three hits, three walks, a hit batter pitcher Daniel Hudson and a flyball that Jose Guillen dropped to allow the final two runs to score. Miguel Montero hit a three-run double.
"We're better than this. We know it," Bochy told reporters. "They all need to step it up. It's tough when you go through a streak like this. The last thing you can do is accept it. You have to do something about it, individually, as a staff, as a team. We have to fix it."
There is no cavalry coming. In Bochy's mind, the starters who are here must throw more strikes and better strikes, not nitpick with two strikes and two outs, and they must do whatever it takes between starts to be readier.
Zito said his pitches are not "crisp" and declined to blame the inning of relief he threw Wednesday.
As a staff, Zito said, "There's an ebb and flow. This is just not a good time to have a little lull right now. We're in a playoff race. It's still August, but we can't take anything lightly. It's up to us to make a statement in the first and second inning, telling them we're going to hold them down, and we're not doing it."
Arizona won behind a rookie for the second consecutive night. Hudson allowed two runs in seven innings, the only big hits an Andres Torres triple and Pablo Sandoval home run.
The Giants got a scare during batting practice when closer Brian Wilson was Vikings jersey
clocked in the throat with a baseball. He was playing long toss in the outfield with Santiago Casilla and missed the ball, which he might not have seen.
Wilson went down but later walked off the field. The area was sore, but in the clubhouse afterward he said, "I'm fine."
The team as a whole could not say the same.

Neill replaces Dearth, who replaced Binn

Steelers jersey
The San Diego Chargers are on their second long snapper since David Binn was hurt on Monday night and placed on injured reserve.
The Chargers say James Dearth, who was signed Wednesday to nfl jerseys
replace Binn, has been placed on IR after hurting Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
his foot in practice on Thursday.
To take Dearth's spot, the Chargers on Friday signed Ryan Neill to a one-year contract. He is in his fourth NFL season and snapped in nine games during the 2009 season for the St. Louis Rams.
Binn was the longest-tenured Chargers player. San Diego Minnesota Vikings jersey
plays its home opener Sunday against Jacksonville. The game will be blacked out on local TV.

Can 'Boys regroup? Jets talked too much?

Steelers jersey
Every week, the experts of FOX NFL Sunday will candidly reveal their observations and make their opinions known as they prepare for the top-rated pregame telecast — seen each Sunday at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT. We'll share with you some of the highlights from Curt, Terry, Howie, Jimmy and Michael grabbed from cheap nfl jerseys
their weekly conference call with insider John Czarnecki
This week, Czar probes the FOX NFL Sunday crew on the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets.
John Czarnecki: What were your impressions of the final play between the Cowboys and Redskins?
Howie Long: The way I looked at it was if Marion Barber just helps Alex Barron out and just chips at Brian Orakpo, they win the game.
Michael Strahan: I’ve been saying that every day. When you know a guy is having trouble blocking a guy, the coaches have to find a way to help him out in a key situation like that. It was just stupid that they didn’t have someone chipping that guy.
HL: I mean it just didn’t make sense that they allowed their weakest link on the backside to be left on an island like that. I don’t get it.
Czar: The Bears visit the Cowboys on Sunday. Can Dallas regroup and win?
Jimmy Johnson: Wade (Phillips) is really taking a beating on this. And I put it totally on Wade and I don’t put it on the players or even (offensive coordinator) Jason Garrett. His job is to find plays that will score. I mean, they don’t really have a play that will score a touchdown from 60 yards away with four seconds left. Just take a knee. Now, in this game, they are going to give the Bears a lot of trouble with their defense. They should really be able to harass Jay Cutler if DeMarcus Ware is healthy enough to play.
***
Czar: Another big game for the Jets with New England. Do you think Mark Sanchez can play a little better going against Tom Brady?
Terry Bradshaw: I made the comment to my neighbor is that Sanchez looked like a college quarterback. Set up real quick and throw the ball to one place. I think what the Jets did was gameplan it that way. I don’t think it was his fault. I have to assume they didn’t believe they could protect him. All they wanted out of him was to complete a 4-yard pass on third-and-3. The Jets did not give him a chance to play quarterback. They basically took him out of the offense. Plus, he looked too nervous and jittery back there.

HL: It’s like they were saying, "Just don’t screw it up." If I was looking at him as a defensive player, he looked real nervous and rattled. I mean, how could they have left their left guard on an island on a five-step drop? There were asking for a Haloti Ngata landing on their quarterback. Colts jersey
The difference to me in the game was the two young quarterbacks and that Baltimore’s receiving corps is better.
TB: Plus, they have to live with a head coach mouthing off.
MS: The problem is when you have a show like “Hard Knocks” is that guys watch themselves on that show. That’s why I think they set themselves up for failure because they are trying to live up to a Hollywood image and not a real image. On one segment, Rex really talked up John Connor, calling him the Terminator. If I’m an inside linebacker, the way they were building up John Connor, I would want to hit him first, so when they went into the coaches room the next day they would be asking "What happened?”
HL: You know that Ray Lewis couldn’t wait to hit him.
MS: I just got back from New York; everybody is the Jets, the Jets, the Jets. And everybody has watched that show and got their hopes up. Football looks really sexy when they slow it down and put a deep, dark voice behind it. The reality sitting at home is that they sure didn’t look that way when it was time to play. For the Jets, you can fall into a trap like that. Now, one of the attitude players for the Jets was Kris Jenkins and now he’s out and talking about retiring. He was one of their strengths. Losing Kris takes away a lot of their attitude. I’m not saying they still won’t be a good defense, but he was cocky, arrogant and a Rex Ryan kind of guy. They lost some of their invincibility now before the season has really gotten started.
Czar: Basically, everyone is saying they shouldn’t have done “Hard Knocks."
TB: There really is not that much difference between the really good teams in the NFL. And when you give the other teams a little more incentive — I mean nobody can stand the Jets because of all the stuff that Rex Ryan has said. I don’t think their players are quite like him, but I do believe every team is going to raise it up a little bit more when they play them. They have created a monster for themselves and they will have to deal with this week in and week out and I don’t think they can deal with it.
Curt Menefee: One of the problems is that when teams looked at the Jets on “Hard Knocks” they really didn’t look at them as a football team. The way they won last year was by running the ball and playing great defense. So, you take out of the equation Alan Faneca at left guard and Thomas Jones at running back. They miss the leadership of Jones in the locker room and what he did on the field.
TB: Remember, last year when they started to brag on Sanchez as a quarterback? Well, when they gave him a chance he went down to New Orleans and threw three interceptions. A couple weeks later he threw five against the Bills and they seem to be saying that he’s not quite ready Cowboys jersey
for prime time.
HL: The Faneca loss isn’t as big to that team as the Thomas Jones loss. Everything in that game was field position and who could make the big play. And Baltimore made more plays. And Baltimore simply has better personnel at quarterback, receivers and running back right now.

Broncos' Maroney thankful for fresh start

Steelers jersey
Laurence Maroney gained both his share of yards and critics in five seasons with New England.
He's looking to add more of the former while shedding the latter now football jersey
that he's joined the Denver Broncos.
''It's always helpful to have a clean slate and start over from the beginning,'' Maroney said Friday, 48 hours after the Patriots and Broncos swapped draft picks in a package for the 2006 first-round selection. ''All I want to do is come out here and help to do anything positive to help the team win.''
Maroney has rushed 675 times for 2,799 yards with 25 touchdowns in 52 games since entering the league. But with Maroney slipping down the depth chart, the Patriots decided to cut ties and give him the chance for a fresh start.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said that while he respected Maroney, ''it felt like it was the right time for us to move on,'' particularly considering the perceived value gained in the trade.
Denver sent a 2011 fourth-round pick for Maroney, while acquiring New England's sixth-rounder next year.
Maroney currently isn't practicing due to a thigh injury but is pushing to return next week. He'll fill the short-term void in Denver for a veteran No. 3 back behind starter Knowshon Moreno and backup Correll Buckhalter.
He may eventually push for a regular rotation spot should he re-sign with Denver. Maroney is in the final year of the five-year contract he signed after New England selected him 21st overall in '06. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels earlier this week expressed an interest in Maroney, 25, being a core player beyond this season.
''I would love for this to be a long-term thing,'' Maroney responded. ''You know Denver's going to run the ball. It's one of those things with 'Buck' and 'Kno,' I'm not coming in here trying to take nobody's place. I'm not trying to take nobody's shine. I just want to come in and fit in.''
Maroney integrated well into New England's offense but didn't always stand out as much as hoped. Injuries were part of the issue. A rotational system by the Patriots also helped keep his numbers down.
Maroney's career-best season was gaining 835 yards in '07.
''He's a talented individual,'' said Broncos receiver Jabar Gaffney, a teammate of Steelers jersey
Maroney's in New England from 2006-08. ''He can definitely run the ball. When he makes his mind up that he wants to hit it, he's a real tough running back.''
But there was part of the rub. Critics picked apart his running style, which he described Friday as ''downhill'' but many claimed lacked a decisiveness making his move to the hole and/or a willingness to initiate contact for extra yardage.
Maroney fumbled just once in his first 38 games as a pro but coughed up four during a seven-game stretch last year, which spurred even more debate about his reliability.
''They definitely criticized a lot,'' Maroney said about the skeptics. ''But it's OK. I was a first-rounder, so I feel like they were looking at me in a bigger light than everybody else. It's one of those things where it's over now. That was then. Now I'm here with the Broncos and I'm focused on my future here.''
Maroney didn't completely dismiss the past.
He acknowledged there were things in New England he wished he could have done differently but now wouldn't get the chance to do. Maroney did say that the running back-by-committee approach with the Patriots sometimes made it ''hard to get a feel for the game.''
''I really wasn't upset about the situation,'' he explained. ''I just tried to find the ways to make the best out of it.''
Under slightly different circumstances, Maroney may have actually started his career in Denver. The Broncos under Mike Shanahan had targeted him as a likely No. 1 pick out of the University of Minnesota until the team opted to trade up in the draft to select quarterback Jay Cutler.
Instead, Maroney's now playing under McDaniels, who was the offensive coordinator in New England when he was drafted.
''He's a very talented running back,'' said Broncos guard Russ Hochstein, a member of the Patriots from 2003-08. ''What we get or what we see in the future is completely up to Laurence. Hopefully he pays big dividends down the road.''
Maroney's previous ties to McDaniels should make it easier Vikings jersey
for the running back to quickly assimilate Denver's playbook, which has retained many of the same concepts and terminology.
That is, after the initial shock of the trade finally has worn off.
''It wasn't anything I expected to happen or knew would happen. It kind of came out of thin air and just happened,'' Maroney said. ''So I have to take it and run with it.''

AL West-leading Rangers win 7th in row

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—The Texas Rangers could very likely be the AL West champions by time they play their next game at home.
Texas (82-63) heads out on a 10-game trip football jersey
with a season-high 10-game division lead and its magic number at eight after an 11-7 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night, and Oakland’s loss at Kansas City. The Rangers have won a majors-best seven games in a row.
“We’ve set ourselves up,” manager Ron Washington said. “Now we’ve got to go continue playing our brand of baseball. I like our brand of baseball.”
After sweeping three games last weekend against the New York Yankees, winning a pair of marathon games in their final at-bat, the Rangers overcame early deficits in both games against Detroit.
David Murphy(notes), Vladimir Guerrero(notes) and Ian Kinsler(notes) hit long home runs in what might have been their last game at Rangers Ballpark before clinching their first division title since 1999.
“Obviously you get to a point where you start thinking about it,” Kinsler said. “But everyone in here understands that it can turn into a lot of work and we don’t want that to happen. We want to continue to play the way we are right now, and try to close this thing out as fast as possible.”
After their final off day of the regular season Thursday, the Rangers open their trip against AL West foes with three games against Seattle and the Los Angeles Angels before four games in Oakland. Their next home game is Sept. 27 against Seattle, the start of a seven-game homestand heading into the postseason.
Texas built an 8-2 lead in the fourth on Murphy’s three-run homer. The 426-foot blast into the second deck of seats in right by Murphy chased Armando Galarraga(notes) (4-6), who had already allowed Guerrero’s 449-foot homer deep into the visitors bullpen in left-center to start the second.
It was another frustrating night for Detroit, which blew a 4-1 lead Tuesday when Texas scored the last 10 runs of that game.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland got ejected by home plate umpire Jerry Layne at the end of the fourth inning Wednesday after saying something from the dugout. Leyland then came out for an extended and sometimes animated discussion.
“We didn’t play our best baseball in this series and he got frustrated with some of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the calls,” Tigers catcher Gerald Laird(notes) said. “He’s going to back his team up. We have all the respect in the world for him. He felt like he needed to take a stand. That got us going and we battled back.”
Colby Lewis(notes) (11-12) went six innings to win his second straight start after needing 10 chances to finally get his 10th victory. The right-hander gave up five runs on four hits and three walks while making two fielding errors, his throwing miscue leading to three unearned runs.
Galarraga gave up a season-high eight runs, seven of them earned. It was the shortest start of the season for the right-hander who had a perfect game taken away by a blown umpire’s call in June.
Ryan Raburn(notes) homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs for Detroit. Miguel Cabrera(notes) had a pair of sacrifice flies.
Raburn’s 13th homer, a solo shot in the seventh, got the Tigers within 9-7 before Kinsler hit his two-run homer to straightaway center in the bottom of the inning.
“We played well, we battled,” Michael Young(notes) said. “Our energy level was up. We had to come back in a lot of these games in order to win. We’re right where we want to be. We’re not satisfied, but definitely happy with our effort level.”
Raburn’s double in the first off the top of the 14-foot wall in left drove in a run to make it 2-0. The ball hit the wall’s padding in play and bounced back on the field, though Leyland argued it might be a home run and umpires looked at the replay to confirm their call.
After Guerrero’s 27th homer and 107th RBI of the season to start the second, Nelson Cruz(notes) doubled and scored when Kinsler had a sacrifice bunt that turned into a throwing error by catcher Alex Avila(notes).
The Rangers went ahead to stay after Elvis Andrus(notes) and Young opened the third with consecutive singles. Andrus scored the tiebreaking run when Murphy had what was essentially a swinging bunt that was fielding near by the first-base line by Galarraga, who then threw the ball into Murphy’s back for an error.
Murphy’s homer an inning later stretched his career-best hitting streak to 13 games.
Detroit scored three times in the fifth, all the runs coming after Lewis fielded a comebacker, then turned to throw the ball to second. He instead threw it well wide of the bag into the center field, the second time he has done that this season.
Notes: Cabrera had his majors-best 45th double in the third, then shoved Kinsler, who applied a tag when Cabrera didn’t slide into the base and almost overran it. Nothing else happened and the two later were cutting up with each other. … Kinsler, appealing a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
one-game suspension for taking part in an on-field postgame celebration after being ejected, said he thought the suspension would be dropped. … It was the second game in a row umpires looked at replay after Leyland argued. In Tuesday night’s game it was for Murphy’s home run down the right-field line that was upheld.

Cubs beat Cardinals 7-3 to complete 3-game sweep

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
ST. LOUIS (AP)—Carlos Zambrano(notes) decided to try a different approach after he struggled during his pregame bullpen session Wednesday night.
Since he was pitching in St. Louis, of course it worked out just fine.
Zambrano tossed six innings of nfl jersey
two-run ball, Tyler Colvin(notes) hit a three-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat Chris Carpenter(notes) and the sliding Cardinals 7-3 to complete their first three-game sweep in St. Louis in more than 20 years.
Zambrano (9-6) allowed an earned run and four hits, improving to 6-0 with a 1.37 ERA in his last seven starts. He is 7-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 12 career starts in St. Louis, including 6-0 in seven outings at the new Busch Stadium.
“When I come here, for some reason I feel good,” Zambrano said. “I said before the game, any time you face (Adam) Wainright or Carpenter, you got to come with your ‘A’ game. Those guys are not easy matchups. They’re two of the best in the league, and you got to come dealing, too.”
Zambrano was struggling to get his fastball up to 90 mph before the game, so he decided to improvise. He told pitching coach Larry Rothschild he planned to use his breaking stuff more.
“When you see the gun and your fastball is only 88 or 89 you have to pitch with your other pitches,” Zambrano said.
It was the Cubs’ first three-game series sweep in St. Louis since June 10-12, 1988. Chicago also has won five consecutive games at the Cardinals for the first time since June 18-Aug. 14, 1983.
“I’m thrilled to win games,” interim manager Mike Quade said. “To come in here and play like this against a club that’s fighting like a son of Indianapolis Colts jersey
a gun to get the division makes it even better.”
Colvin connected against Carpenter (15-7) in the Cubs’ four-run seventh inning, becoming the fourth Chicago rookie to hit 20 homers in a season. Teammate Geovany Soto(notes) was the last to accomplish the feat, hitting 23 in 2008.
Micah Hoffpauir(notes) also doubled in a run in the seventh and Aramis Ramirez(notes) added a two-run drive in the eighth.
Carpenter pitched 6 1-3 innings before leaving with a right hamstring cramp. He was charged with five runs and seven hits.
“I felt like I threw the ball well,” Carpenter said. “Colvin hit a good pitch. That’s what was kind of weird. I was fine the whole game.”
Not even the return of Albert Pujols(notes) could help the Cardinals, who fell eight games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central with 18 games left on their schedule. Pujols missed Tuesday’s game with inflammation in his left elbow, but he started Wednesday and went 0 for 2 with two walks and was hit by a pitch.
“We’re struggling,” St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said. “The scores weren’t really close; that’s troubling. We’re all troubled.”
The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but Carlos Marmol(notes) struck out Matt Holliday(notes) and Colby Rasmus(notes) to record his 31st save in 36 chances. He now has 122 strikeouts, tops among all major league relievers.
Holliday, Rasmus and Molina each drove in a run for St. Louis.
Something seemed to be bothering Carpenter when the Cubs rallied in the seventh. Ramirez led off with a double to right and went to third on Xavier Nady’s(notes) infield single to third. After Alfonso Soriano(notes) struck out, Colvin hit a 3-2 off-speed pitch into the right-field stands to make it 4-2.
Colvin said Carpenter left the pitch up just enough for him to hit it out.
“He didn’t put it down in the dirt and I was able to get it pretty good,” Colvin said.
Carpenter then allowed back-to-back doubles to Koyie Hill(notes) and pinch-hitter Hoffpauir before he was lifted for Jason Motte(notes).
NOTES: Due to concerns about his workload, the Cardinals decided to Dallas Cowboys jersey
have Jaime Garcia(notes) skip his next scheduled start Saturday. Garcia, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, is 13-8 with a 2.70 ERA in 163 1-3 innings but has lost his last two decisions. … Zambrano has won five consecutive starts for first time since he won six straight from July 2-30, 2006. … The home run was the 20th allowed by Carpenter; he allowed only seven all last season. seven all last season.

Chargers place LS Binn on I.R., sign LS Dearth

Minnesota Vikings jersey
T he Chargers placed veteran LS David Binn(notes) on injured reserve on Wednesday because of a hamstring injury and signed veteran LS James Dearth(notes) to replace him.
Binn, who played in 256 of the last 257 regular-season games San Diego hasnfl jerseys
played and all 12 of its playoff games dating back to his rookie season in 1994, is the longest-tenured Charger on this year's team.
He suffered the injury during Monday night's loss at Kansas City. By being placed on I.R., it means he will miss the rest of the season.
Dearth played in 144 consecutive regular-season games for the New York Jets from 2001-09 and their last nine playoff games. The 6-4, 265-pounder became a free agent after the '09 season and spent time with the Redskins this past preseason before being cut prior to the season.
The way we see it
The Chargers did well to replace the trusted Binn with a veteran in Dearth who has been a very dependable short- and long-snapper for many years.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—The New York Jets have placed nose tackle Kris Jenkins(notes) on injured reserve and signed defensive tackle Howard Green(notes) to help replace him.
The move Wednesday gives the Jets some much-needed depth on the defensive line, which took a major hit when Jenkins went down for the season.
An MRI exam revealed Tuesday that Jenkins tore the ACL in Minnesota Vikings jersey
his surgically repaired left knee early in the Jets’ season-opening 10-9 loss to Baltimore on Monday night. Jenkins missed half of last season after sustaining the same injury.
Green played with the Jets last season, but signed with the Washington Redskins as a free agent. He was among the final cuts by the Redskins on Sept. 4.

Scout’s notebook: Defense

Minnesota Vikings jersey
A scout’s take on the good, the bad and the ugly from the second week of the college football season concerning the nation’s top defensive prospects.
I got the chance this weekend to really take a close look at three of the nation’s top senior prospects in defensive linemen Adrian Clayborn, Allen Bailey and Cameron Heyward, and I really wanted to compare their strengths, weaknesses and overall differences in their game.
What makes these three prospects so unique is that in a time of cheap nfl jerseys
undersized speed rushers, these three prospects are bigger, more physically put together linemen who have the ability to set the edge, overpower on contact and even kick inside to tackle on third down.
Therefore, the first guy we will look at is Miami’s Allen Bailey. Bailey is the most explosive athlete of the bunch. He exhibits an impressive initial first step off the football, coils up well into his stance and has a nice combination of power and explosion to his game. He did a much better job this week vs. Ohio State anchoring at the point of attack when run at and when asked to stack a pulling guard.
Now, he still will take himself out of some plays at times, but for the most part I thought he did a much better job playing the run compared to last season. However, as a pass rusher I do have some concerns. He isn’t the most aware of defenders and is rarely the first lineman moving off the snap. And although he possesses a good first step when asked to get into defenders or shoot the C gap inside, he lacks ideal body control into contact, tends to lose balance and isn’t nearly as comfortable slipping blocks on contact and using his hands to disengage. He does possess some bull rush ability, but overall he’s still pretty raw as a pass rusher at this stage and might be better suited kicked inside to tackle on third downs where he can use his burst to one-gap and get up the field.
Heyward, on the other hand, is the most efficient interior player of the bunch. He does a nice job keeping his base down, can fire off the football and knife his way into the backfield with consistency. Now, he isn’t the most explosive pass rusher off the edge and isn’t real sudden when asked to disengage. But, he is the most powerful rusher of the bunch who maintains his balance well when working his way toward the quarterback and smoothly changes his body angles, which allows him to fight his way through contact and collapse his side of the pocket into the quarterback’s lap. Now, like Bailey, he isn’t nearly as instinctive getting off the ball on time when lined up on the outside compared to at DT. But, he plays the run extremely well as a base end, recognizing his run/pass keys quickly, generating good leverage on contact and using his long powerful arms to stack and shed on the edge.
And finally, in my opinion, Iowa’s Adrian Clayborn is far and way the best of the three. He isn’t quite the athlete that Bailey is; however, it’s his suddenness, body control and extremely quick/powerful hands that allows him to consistently slip blocks and accelerate up the field. Pair that with his overall power on his bull rush and drive when asked to fight through defenders once he gains a step and he is in my opinion the best pass rusher of the bunch. The guy also does a great job anchoring vs. the run as well. He possesses a nice blend of power, balance and range when asked to stack and shed on contact and displays the instincts to consistently find the football and make a play off his frame.
And the winner is…
Therefore, overall I think all three players have the talent to mature into very capable NFL starters and add some intriguing versatility to any defense they end up playing in. But, despite the immense physical talent and upside of Allen Bailey and the overall size and power of Cameron Heyward, after watching tape all summer of these guys and now breaking down their first real tests of the 2010 college football season, as of now, Adrian Clayborn to me is the best potential pro prospect of the group.
Snippets…
• Speaking of big defensive linemen, Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt is an impressive 6-6, 292-pound defensive end who plays with a great blend of Dallas Cowboys jersey
power, flexibility and overall passion on the outside. The guy was downright unblockable at times this week vs. San Jose State and consistently was jarring blockers on contact and putting them on the ground. A potential big-time five-technique prospect at the next level.
• I was really unimpressed with the Ohio State cornerback play this weekend. Devon Torrence simply plays too high in his drop and it takes him so long to regain balance and close on the football on passes in front of him. Some of those deep outs he gave completions up on were in the air for an eternity and he never even got close when asked to drive on the football. Chimdi Chekwa, on the other hand, despite his opportunistic two picks, isn’t real impressive in press coverage off the line, is really leggy when asked to turn and run and consistently allowed receivers to easily get behind him. Both guys are gifted size/speed athletes, but are so raw technically that it really takes away from their ability to make plays on the football in man-coverage. Both look at best like reserve-type options in the NFL to me.
• Mississippi State standout outside linebacker K.J Wright showed the kind of pop as a downhill guy I was waiting to see on tape all last season. He did a much better job dropping his pad level into contact, keeping his head up and really snapping at the hips. It’s continued improvements like this that make me think he’s a potential starting strong side backer at the next level.
• Hampton defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis had a game for the ages this week, finishing with 16 tackles, two and a half tackles for loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery. He’s a massive 6-4, 340-pound kid who is simply a man among boys at the FCS level. And if he can begin to put it all together this season, there is a whole lot of upside to his game in terms of draft grade and NFL potential.
• I liked the improvements made to the game of Mississippi State DE Pernell McPhee. McPhee isn’t the most explosive guy off the edge. But he’s a long, strong athlete who can overpower on contact and really looks a lot more coordinated and confident using his hands to shed blocks this season. He did a great job working a violent rip early in the game last week and then countering off it later with a sudden spin — something you can tell he’s been working on all summer. Plus, he showed some versatility as a stand-up rush guy, as well, and could even get some looks as a potential strong side 3-4 rush linebacker in the NFL. The future looks really bright for this guy as he continues to improve his overall game.
• There is no doubt in my mind that West Virginia CB Brandon Hogan has the skill set to play and even start at the next level, as I ranked the guy as one of the top senior prospects in the entire draft. However, he does have some past character concerns and was arrested this weekend and charged with DUI. Hogan is a tough, hard-working guy on the field who will play special teams, tackle in run support and has a real passion for the game. But off-the-field character could really hurt his stock on draft day.
• DT Muhammad Wilkerson is another of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the up and coming Temple prospects who looks poised to take his game to the next level, as he finished this week with six tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. The junior talent has a unique combination of size, burst and length, and will intrigue as both a potential starting three- or five-technique in the NFL.

Sharpe on CBS hiatus after restraining order

Minnesota Vikings jersey
ATLANTA (AP)—CBS says former NFL player Shannon Sharpe is taking a break from football analysis after a woman obtained a temporary restraining order against him.

A hearing on the order is scheduled for Monday in Atlanta. Documents filed in football jersey
Fulton County court show Sharpe was ordered not to come within 200 yards of the woman and not to have any contact with her or her family.
The Associated Press is not naming the woman because she says Sharpe forced her to have sex with him.
She also says he has threatened her life and is conducting surveillance of her.
LeslieAnne Wade, a spokeswoman for CBS Sports, says the ex-Denver Bronco and Baltimore Raven has decided to step aside as an analyst for NFL Today until the case is resolved. The network says it accepts Sharpe’s decision and declined further comment.
Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders(notes), the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, had his torn biceps tendon surgically repaired today by Dr. James Andrews.
The Colts didn't indicate when Sanders might return, but Indianapolis Colts jersey
he is slated to remain on the 53-man active roster.
For now, they're holding out hope that he could play again this season.
Melvin Bullitt(notes) will start in Sanders' place.
In seven NFL seasons, Sanders has played in 48 games and missed another 49 games.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP)—Buffalo Bills center Geoff Hangartner(notes) missed practice because of an injured left ankle.
Coach Chan Gailey on Wednesday declined to discuss the nature of the injury except to say Hangartner was held out for precautionary reasons. Gailey says the player will be evaluated to determine whether he can practice Thursday as the Bills prepare to play at Green Bay on Sunday.
Hangartner was hurt in the second half of a 15-10 loss to Minnesota Vikings jersey
Miami on Sunday. He continued playing after having his left ankle wrapped on the sideline.
Also, starting outside linebacker Reggie Torbor(notes) practiced fully after missing last week’s game with a chest injury. Gailey said he’s hopeful Torbor will play Sunday.

First time I’ve won giving up four runs

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

The Philadelphia Phillies and Roy Oswalt(notes) continue to mutually benefit since his acquisition in July.
The Phillies look to win for the eighth straight time with Oswalt on the mound Sunday in the finale of a three-game road set against the New York Mets.
Acquired from Houston in late July, Oswalt (11-13, 3.09 ERA) lost his nfl jersey
debut with the Phillies to Washington, but is 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA in his seven subsequent starts. Philadelphia (82-61) has won all of those games, including a 7-4 victory over Florida on Monday. Oswalt gave up four runs over seven innings.
The right-hander owns one of the lowest run-support averages in baseball at 3.09 - mostly from his 20 starts with the Astros.
“First time I’ve won giving up four runs,” Oswalt said. “It’s nice.”
Oswalt, who has never pitched at Citi Field, is 5-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 13 career starts against the Mets.
Philadelphia had its four-game win streak snapped with a 4-3 loss Saturday, falling into a tie with Atlanta for the NL East lead. Both clubs lead San Francisco by two games for the wild card.
Jimmy Rollins(notes) has missed the first two games of Indianapolis Colts jersey
this series with tightness in his right hamstring. Manager Charlie Manuel said there is no guarantee his shortstop will be ready to play Sunday.
His return would come at a good time since Rollins is hitting .292 against left-handers this year, and New York (70-72) is starting southpaw Jonathon Niese(notes) (9-7, 3.85) for the series finale.
Niese has pitched well against Philadelphia this year, going 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts. However, he is 0-2 with a 7.41 ERA in his last three starts at home.
Niese gave up five runs over six innings last Sunday in an 18-5 road win over the Chicago Cubs, avoiding a personal three-game losing streak.
Right fielder Jayson Werth(notes) has had the most success against Niese of any Phillies batter, going 3 for 5 in their matchups.
Ike Davis(notes) four hits and three RBIs on Saturday to continue his big September for the Mets. The rookie first baseman is 16 for 34 with three homers and four RBIs in 10 games this month.
“Ike is constantly making adjustments as the opposition is adjusting for him,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said, “which is a sign that he is a good player.”
Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran(notes) sat out Dallas Cowboys jersey
with tendinitis in his left knee. Beltran said the injury was a result of overcompensating during the rehabilitation of his surgically repaired right knee this past spring. He is day to day.
“I’ve been dealing with it since I had the surgery,” Beltran told the Mets’ official website. “It wasn’t as bad as it got to be (Friday), but I’m not concerned.”

Mike Lowell to retire after this season

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

Red Sox infielder Mike Lowell(notes) said Saturday that this will be his last year as a player.
“I’m retiring,” Lowell told the Boston Herald before nfl jerseys
Boston's game against the Oakland Athletics. “I just don’t want to make it a song and dance because I don’t think that’s necessary, but if someone needs something official, yeah, I’m going to retire. This is going to be my last year.”
The news was not unexpected. Lowell, 36, has been giving strong hints that this will be his last year as a player.
Injuries have cut into Lowell's playing time the past three Minnesota Vikings jersey
seasons. He has played in just 61 games this season. Lowell told the Herald he's not interested in continuing his career as a part-time player.
“I do think I can platoon somewhere, but I don’t really enjoy it,” he said. “I can do it, but not after playing every day for 11 years and three years in the minor leagues and my whole life. I’m not willing to make that transition, not when the tradeoff is all that time with my family. It’s not worth it.”
Lowell is in his fifth season with the Red Sox Dallas Cowboys jersey
after seven years with the Florida Marlins and part of one season with the New York Yankees.

Dempster earns 100th win as Cubs beat Brewers 1-0

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

MILWAUKEE (AP)—After a rough couple of starts, this was one memorable victory for Ryan Dempster(notes).
Dempster struck out eight in seven crisp innings, earning his 100th career win and helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Saturday night.
“Just to get to the big leagues is one thing, but to nfl jersey
win 100 games is a special thing,” the 33-year-old right-hander said. “It really is. It means a lot. Especially coming from Canada, there’s not a lot of people that have done it. It really gives me a greater appreciation for those guys out there that have won 300 games.”
Dempster (13-10) was coming off a pair of shaky starts, both double-digit losses for Chicago. He allowed seven runs over three innings in a 14-7 loss to Pittsburgh on Aug. 31 and yielded seven runs—three earned—over 4 2-3 innings in a 18-5 drubbing by the New York Mets last Sunday.
“It’s been a struggle my last couple times out,” he said. “So to go out there and throw the ball well again felt good. Your team throws a shutout, great job by all the guys in the bullpen. It was a lot of fun.”
Dempster allowed three hits and walked two, improving to 15-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 22 career starts against the Brewers. The right-hander retired 21 of the first 26 batters on his way to his 50th victory with Chicago.
“He was really sharp tonight,” Cubs interim manager Mike Quade said after the club improved to 6-2 at Miller Park this season.
Xavier Nady(notes) homered for Chicago, which got an outstanding outing from Carlos Zambrano(notes) in a 4-0 victory in the series opener Friday night.
Randy Wolf(notes) (11-11) pitched eight innings for Milwaukee, yielding four hits and one walk. The left-hander is 4-2 with a 3.07 ERA in nine starts since he was roughed up at Pittsburgh on July 21, yielding 12 runs and 13 hits in 5 2-3 innings.
His only mistake was the 0-1 curveball out over the plate that Nady hit for his sixth homer in the seventh inning, banging the drive off the left-field foul pole.
“That ball just stayed true,” Wolf said. “It’s a matter of probably six to eight inches of allowing a foul ball or home run.”
Nady said he thought it was going to be foul “by 10 or 15 feet.”
“I was almost to the point where I Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
wasn’t even going to run to first because I thought I pulled it that far foul,” he said.
Milwaukee put runners on first and second in the eighth before Andrew Cashner(notes) struck out Ryan Braun for the second out. Sean Marshall(notes) then came in and fanned Prince Fielder(notes) to end the inning.
Carlos Marmol(notes) pitched the ninth for his 30th save in 35 chances.
Casey McGehee(notes) reached on an infield single in the fourth, Wolf had a base hit in the fifth and Alcides Escobar(notes) singled in the seventh for Milwaukee’s only hits.
Dempster is 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA in five starts against Milwaukee this season. He has won his last four road starts for the first time since a career-high five in a row for the Marlins in 2001.
Asked if there was something about Milwaukee that he liked, he said jokingly, “The brats are awesome. I enjoy this field. I enjoy the atmosphere here in the clubhouse. It’s a great mound to throw off of. For whatever reason I have had some success here.”
Brewers manager Ken Macha said Dempster gave his hitters trouble all night.
“Our guys keep saying they can’t see the spin on his slider,” Macha said.
Dempster made his major league debut with Florida in 1998 and also has played for the Cincinnati Reds. He also had 87 saves for Chicago from 2004-07.
NOTES: Brewers vice president of communications Tyler Barnes said the team was unable to determine who stuffed a fake press release critical of Cubs general manager Jim Hendry into the game notes in the press box before Friday night’s game. … Cubs 3B Dallas Cowboys jersey
Aramis Ramirez(notes) missed his fifth consecutive game with a sore right quad and remains day to day. … Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin, assistant general manager Gord Ash and Macha met before the game. Macha said that his contract status was not on the agenda.

Rookie Luebke leads Padres past Dodgers

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Rookie Cory Luebke(notes) struck out seven in six sparkling innings, Luis Durango(notes) hit a key two-run single and the San Diego Padres added to their lead in the NL West with a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on football jerseys
Wednesday night.
San Diego has won three consecutive games since losing 10 in a row and is two ahead of San Francisco after the Giants lost 3-1 at Arizona. The Padres will host the Giants in an important four-game series beginning Thursday.
Luebke (1-1) gave San Diego a big lift in his second major Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
league start, holding the Dodgers to two hits. It was a much better showing than his big league debut, when he surrendered a pair of two-run homers over five innings in a 4-3 loss against Colorado.
Four relievers combined to finish the three-hitter. Luke Gregerson(notes) got the final five outs for his second save in seven opportunities.
Matt Kemp(notes) doubled in the second, Rafael Furcal(notes) reached on an infield single in the third and James Loney(notes) singled in the eighth for the Dodgers’ only hits.
It was San Diego’s 17th shutout, tied for second Minnesota Vikings jersey
in the majors with Philadelphia and trailing the New York Mets by one.

Howard has 6 RBIs in Phillies’ win

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Ryan Howard(notes) homered and had six RBIs and the Philadelphia Phillies backed Cole Hamels(notes) with a rare burst of the run support he had been missing most of the season in a 10-6 win over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night.
Howard hit his 28th homer of the season and the NL East-leading Phillies tied a season high with 17 hits.
Hamels (10-10) tossed four-hit ball nfl jerseys
over seven innings and extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 25. He struck out five and won his third straight start.

His record would be well over .500 if not for receiving the fourth-lowest run support (3.18 runs per start) of any starter this season entering the game.
He got plenty in Philadelphia’s third straight win.
Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins(notes) left with tightness in his right hamstring. He is day-to-day.
Gaby Sanchez(notes) hit a three-run homer for the Marlins as part of a six-run eighth off Nate Robertson(notes).
Hamels was sensational and earned a standing ovation when he struck out Brad Davis(notes) to end the seventh. Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP, might have 15 wins by now if the Phillies had some pop in their bats in his starts.
The Phillies were shut out in four of his starts—including consecutive 1-0 losses in early August. The Phillies entered having scored only 19 runs in Hamels’ last 11 starts. They scored two or fewer runs in 13 of his first 28 starts.
They tried to make it up to him from the start Wednesday, scoring runs in each of the first five innings and staked him to a 10-0 lead.
Howard did the bulk of the damage against Andrew Miller(notes) (1-1). He had a two-run single in the first inning and went deep with an opposite-field, three-run shot to left in the fourth that made it 7-0.
Miller was long gone when Howard’s line-drive Dallas Cowboys jersey
single to right in the seventh put the Phillies ahead 10-0. Howard was batting .188 in 16 games since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 21.
Put in perspective, the Phillies scored 10 runs combined in Hamels’ last six starts.
Hamels never really groused about his lack of support and kept giving the Phillies the kind of quality starts that has them convinced they can make another deep October run. The Phillies started the day a half-game ahead of Atlanta in the NL East as they make a run toward their fourth straight division title.
The Phillies don’t know if they will have to move on without Rollins.
Rollins—who has slumped so badly this season he was dropped from leadoff to sixth in the batting order—gingerly ran to second base and didn’t slide on a two-out double in the third. He didn’t have his usual burst around third base when he scored on Carlos Ruiz’s(notes) single.
Rollins slid at home and slowly walked back to the dugout. He had his head down as he talked with manager Charlie Manuel. Rollins was 2 for 2 and was replaced by Wilson Valdez(notes).
The three-time All-Star shortstop has twice been on the 15-day disabled list this season because of a calf problem. He got hurt warming up before the Phillies’ home opener and missed 31 games, then re-injured himself less than a week later on May 21.
Chase Utley(notes) had two RBIs for the Phillies.
NOTES: Marlins SS Hanley Ramirez(notes) was held out of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the starting lineup with a sore back. … Marlins RHP Josh Johnson(notes) has right shoulder inflammation and a strained mid-back, making it unclear when the All-Star will return to the mound. There was no structural damage found and he will rejoin the Marlins on Friday for a series in Washington, but the team has not decided when he might pitch again. … Phillies closer Brad Lidge(notes) was unavailable because of a tender right elbow. Pitching coach Rich Dubee says he’s “very confident” Lidge will be ready by Friday. … Phillies rookie OF Domonic Brown(notes) is day-to-day with a strained right quadriceps.

Lowe beats Pirates again as Braves win 9-3

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Not many teams call a game against the last-place Pirates a must-win. The Atlanta Braves did, and they responded exactly the way manager Bobby Cox hoped they would.
Omar Infante(notes) had three hits, Derek Lowe(notes) beat Pittsburgh for the 10th straight time and the Braves got the breakout victory they badly needed, beating the Pirates 9-3 on Wednesday night.
The Braves opened leads of cheap nfl jerseys
3-0 in the first and 8-0 in the third after being held to two runs or fewer in five of their previous six games. They had lost three in a row to fall out of the NL East lead for the first time since May 31, dropping a half-game behind Philadelphia. That margin held when the Phillies beat Florida 10-6.

With the Braves in danger of being swept by the last-place Pirates in a three-game series for the first time since 1994, Cox said the solution was simple: Score more runs.
Score, they did.
“We didn’t hit any out of the ballpark, but we made some contact and we finally found some holes with men on,” said Cox, whose team had 14 hits and left 13 on base. “It was bound to change. Our luck had to change a little bit. We got it kick started, so to speak.”
Pirates starter Zach Duke(notes) (7-13) retired only three of 11 batters, giving up six hits and walking two in one-plus inning. Alex Gonzalez’s(notes) two-run single finished off a three-run first, and Duke was lifted after Lowe doubled, Infante singled and Jason Heyward(notes) walked to start the second.
“Obviously I wasn’t doing much good while I was out there, so I can’t fault the manager (for being lifted),” Duke said. “I was more frustrated with myself at that point.”
Reliever Daniel McCutchen(notes) wasn’t much better, walking Derrek Lee(notes) to force in a run in the second before giving up four runs, three earned, in the third. McCutchen’s own throwing error on Lowe’s sacrifice scored a run, Infante singled in another and Martin Prado(notes) had a two-run single.
“This was a must-win here, we needed this win,” Lee said after Indianapolis Colts jersey
the Braves lost to Pirates starters Brian Burres(notes) and James McDonald(notes) the previous two days. “We didn’t want to get swept here, so it was a pretty big game for us.”
Lowe (12-12) is 10-0 with a 2.64 ERA in as many starts against Pittsburgh, the best such record by any major league pitcher. He cruised through six innings after striking out Ryan Doumit(notes) with the bases loaded to end the first.
Lowe skipped a start due to a sore right elbow that may require offseason surgery to remove bone chips, but felt no discomfort in his first start since Aug. 29.
“Couldn’t have asked for a better scenario—score a lot of runs and every pitch wasn’t life or death,” Lowe said.
With both teams’ rosters bulked up, the final three innings resembled a spring training game. The Pirates used 22 players but still had 13 left on the bench, and Cox lifted five of his position players—including Infante. He went 3 for 5 to raise his average to .342, which would lead the NL if he had enough plate appearances.
The Pirates tied a club record by using eight pitchers in a nine-inning game, reaching the total for the fourth time and first since 2007.
Notes: Pittsburgh is 47-92 with 23 games remaining and is on pace to lose 107 games. … Cox managed for the last time in Pittsburgh, which was eliminated in the 1991 and 1992 NL playoffs by his Braves. The Pirates presented Cox with a $5,000 check for charity. … Cox went 125-93 vs. Pittsburgh. … To honor Roberto Clemente Day, the Pirates wore the beltless-style knit uniforms, with gold caps, like those first worn when Three Rivers Stadium opened in 1970. … 2B Neil Minnesota Vikings jersey
Walker(notes) singled in the first to extend his hitting streak to 15 games (25 for 65, .385), the longest by a Pirates rookie since Rennie Stennett’s 18-game streak in 1971. … Pittsburgh’s last sweep of Atlanta was April 29-May 1, 1994. … Pittsburgh’s Pedro Ciriaco(notes) had an RBI double in the ninth in his first major league at-bat. Alex Presley(notes) singled later for his first hit.
