Offensive Midseason Grades

At the midway point in the NFL season, the ' offense ranks a distant a 32nd in the NFL, nearly 23 yards behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The offense has failed in almost every facet of the game. With eight down and eight to go, let's break down how the unit has performed thus far.Quarterbacks: 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
All three of Oakland's quarterbacks have attempted passes this season. Second-year man Andrew Walter has handled 87 percent of the reps from center, while veterans Aaron Brooks and Marques Tuiasosopo have handled just over six percent each. Of the three, none have stood out. The average passer rating of the trio is just 52.5, with a completion rate just over 45 percent.Of the three, Andrew Walter leads the team with just three passing touchdowns; however, his nine interceptions thrown this season indicate nearly five percent of his total pass attempts.Of all the skill positions, however, quarterback is the most difficult to fully evaluate. The Raiders' front line has already allowed 44 sacks this season, 15 more than the 31st-ranked Cleveland Browns. The atrocious play calling certainly hasn't helped, either.Grade: DOffensive line: In all of 2005, the Raiders' line allowed 45 sacks. By Week 10, the team will likely shatter that mark. The 6-foot-6 Andrew Walter has already collapsed in the pocket 37 times this season, resulting in a loss of 202 yards. At left tackle, Robert Gallery has allowed an atrocious nine sacks, including three in Monday night's loss at Seattle. The former second overall pick hasn't lived up to half of his pre-draft hype since he was selected by the Raiders in 2004. Fellow tackles Langston Walker and Chad Slaughter have been comparably disappointing this season, if not in sacks allowed, then in penalties committed. Finally, at center, second-rounder Jake Grove has allowed, in eight games, five sacks resulting in a loss of 28 yards.Grade: FRunning backs: The Raiders' best offensive position has, by far, been the running backs. That isn't saying much, though. The Raiders' rushing offense ranks 18th in the NFL, averaging 105.1 yards per game. Behind a dismal line, rotating rushers LaMont Jordan and Justin Fargas have posted just one 100-yard performance, which came back in Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns. The team, as a whole, has rushed for just two touchdowns on the season, much in reason due to the offense's overall inability to move the ball. The fullbacks, or lack thereof, have severely hurt the halfbacks' ability to find holes. Zack Crockett, a halfback-converted-fullback has had trouble opening holes, along with providing pass support for Walter. The same can be said for all ball carriers, except perhaps ReShard Lee, who has seen action at fullback in each of the team's last three games.Despite all the negatives, the set of backs still rank 18th in the NFL in rushing -- on an offense that can barely extend a drive past four downs.Grade: CWide receivers: 6-4 Randy Moss is no longer an offensive threat that requires double coverage. In fact, it often takes no defenders to control the drop-happy wideout. Moss ranks at the top of the NFL in drops and has caught just 45.1 percent of the 71 passes directed his way. Put into perspective, the NFL's current receiving leader, Andre Johnson, has caught 70.7 percent of this passes thrown his way. With Jerry Porter riding the bench for the majority of the season, the remainder of Oakland's receivers have been non-factors. Combined, Ronald Curry and Alvis Whitted have 6 Sanchez Purple AFL50th jersey
caught just 13 passes for 388 yards and no touchdowns.Grade: C-Tight ends: The tight ends have been no better than the wide receivers. In fact, since the tight ends are an extension of a porous offensive line, they have been worse. Courtney Anderson and Randal Williams have had trouble holding onto the ball all season, catching just 16 passes for 237 yards through eight games. Anderson, who has started in seven of the team's first eight games, hasn't caught a pass since Oct. 22.Grade: D-Check back tomorrow for the ' defensive midseason marks.Want to be in the Raiders mailbag? Week 8 Stars vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Prior to Sunday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, free safety Stuart Schweigert boldly commented on opposing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger."I don't think he's a great player," Schweigert said. "He had great players around him last year, with a great coach and a great defense."After a 20-13 flattening of 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh offense, Schweigert can confidently stand behind his past comments -- for once, at least.Oakland, despite gaining just 98 yards on offense, controlled the pace of Sunday's game, flustering the Steelers' offensive attack for four quarters. In Schweigert's defense, Roethlisberger was intercepted four times, threw just one touchdown and was sacked five times. However, the young safety can't take full responsibility for Sunday's events. Here are the top performers from the Raiders' second win of the 2006 season (all defensive, of course):5. DTs: Kelly/Sands/Sapp - The trio of rotating tackles registered 11 takedowns and 2 ? sacks. More importantly, though, the massive linemen held running back Willie Parker to just 83 yards on 22 carries, which included a 37-yarder that accounted for nearly half of his production. Particularly, 6-foot-6, 300-pound Tommy Kelly posted his most impressive outing of the '06 campaign, recording 1 ? sacks to complement six solo tackles. In two consecutive wins, the Raiders' line has held their opponents to just 50 and 89 yards rushing, respectively.4. Chris Carr - In a flashback to Nov. 11, 2002, Carr returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown, putting his team up 20-6 deep in the fourth quarter. Nearly four years ago, veteran safety Rod Woodson returned a Week 10 interception back 98 yards against the division-rival Denver Broncos. In that season, Oakland went on to win seven of its last eight games.3. Nnamdi Asomugha - Asomugha is no longer a "project." The four-year vet posted his third interception in seven games, after being shut out from the category from 2003-2005. The 25-year-old returned a deflected pass 24 yards for the Raiders' first touchdown of the game. Asomugha also led the team with nine solo tackles, including a fourth-quarter stuff on receiver Hines Ward three yards short of the end zone. On the ensuing play, the Steelers would turn the ball over on downs, allowing Oakland to drain the majority of the clock.2. Derrick Burgess - In a Week 7 win over Arizona, Burgess was honored as the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week. After recording another 2 ? sacks in Week 8, he may retain the title for seven more days. Burgess also chipped in with three tackles and continually collapsed the pocket around Roethlisberger, allowing the interior tackles to reach the quarterback for another 2 ? sacks. Through seven games, Burgess has recorded 7 ? sacks en route to another top-ranked pass-rushing season.1. Kirk Morrison - The 24-year-old middle linebacker has become the heart of the Raiders' defense. Morrison's nine solo tackles on Sunday upped his season total to a team-leading 55. The San Diego State grad also helped tremendously in pass support, particularly on fourth-down situations. The 240-pound linebacker recorded an interception on fourth-and-1 to open up the final quarter and broke up Roethlisberger's final attempt to reach the end zone with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Morrison is on pace for 125 tackles and four interceptions in just his second season in the NFL.And, don't forget...Fabian Washington - Washington was the first defender to pick off Roethlisberger, just five minutes into the game. The speedy cornerback also recorded three solo tackles from the corner slot.Stuart Schweigert - This season, Schweigert has been the Dallas Cowboys jersey
one thing you want a safety to be -- consistent. Had not Washington intercepted Roethlisberger's fourth pass attempt of the evening, Schweigert's hands would have been under it. The 6-1 free safety also recorded five tackles and broke up a deep pass early in the first quarter intended for Heath Miller.Robert Thomas - Thomas was signed in the offseason to bring experienced depth to a young linebacking crew. The 26-year-old quietly recorded seven tackles, including two consecutive takedowns with the Steelers knocking on the door in the closing moments of the game.Want to be in the Raiders mailbag? Rookie Zach Miller breaking an ugly trend

Never before has a two-catch-per-game tight end been so important to the .Zach Miller, Oakland's second-round pick in 2007, has quietly become one of the team's most valuable young assets through the first three games of the regular season. The 6-foot-5 pass catcher has registered just seven receptions for 54 yards this year, but he has found other ways to show he was worth the 38th overall selection in the NFL draft.Miller is the Raiders' best pass-eligible extension of the offensive line since ...I can't remember.Just take a look at the past decade of 43 Polamalu black jersey
tight ends the Raiders have tried their luck with.Rickey Dudley, who debuted when Mike White was coaching way back in 1996, was perhaps the most respectable of the long list. All the way up until 2003, Dudley recorded 186 receptions for 2,627 yards and 29 touchdowns. That doesn't say much for his blocking abilities, though.Since then, (take a deep breath), David Dunn, Roland Williams, Doug Jolley, Teyo Johnson, O.J. Santiago, Courtney Anderson, James Adkisson and Randal Williams have all lined up from the tight end spot and caught at least one pass with the Raiders.See anybody particularly good? I don't.Of the nine tight ends, including Dudley, none has recorded a 50-plus-catch season in his NFL career. In 10 seasons and counting, rival Tony Gonzalez has achieved that accomplishment nine times.None were particularly great blockers, either. Finally, five months ago, the Raiders did something to address their decade-long dilemma.Oakland selected Miller, who had previously spent three seasons with Arizona State. With the Sun Devils, the Phoenix native hauled in 144 passes for 1,512 yards and 14 touchdowns. What's ironic was that blocking was considered to be one of the 21-year-old's weaknesses heading into the pros. Several major media pundits such as SI.com and Scout.com mentioned "the strength of his base and his blocking" to be major downsides, but his pass catching to be a major positive. Thus far, it has been just the opposite.Miller has shown that he can consistently open holes in the running game; contrarily, in the passing game, he's been rather quiet.Much of the reason he's been absent in the vertical game, though, is thanks to second-year TE John Madsen, who has 11 catches this season for 146 yards. Madsen splits time with Miller throughout each game, particularly on obvious passing downs.Perhaps it's that competition that's contributing to the rookie's success on the line."Competition is a good thing," Miller said after being drafted by Oakland. "I'm out there to work."Off the tackles, where Miller is typically lined up, starting running back LaMont Jordan has carried the ball 40 times for 198 yards (just under 5.0 yards per rush). Much of that productivity has come as a result of 4 Brett Favre White jersey
Miller's ability to take on incoming linebackers and seal the corner. The 255-pounder has also shown great instincts in pass protection, something recent Raider tight ends such as Teyo Johnson and Courtney Anderson were often criticized for."You have to do what you can when you get the reps," Miller said.Even if it means giving up a few receptions to go head-on with a strongside linebacker.

Whistled dead: Raiders let one slip by in OT

The overcame entirely too much on Sunday to not leave Invesco Field with a win.Oakland, a 10-point underdog, quieted the Denver home crowd, came back from a 14-point deficit and stretched the game to an extra quarter. The Raiders even found a way to get the ball back after losing the overtime coin toss.In the end, though, it was a whistle -- a whistle that came while the Raiders' game-winning field goal was already in the air -- that crushed Oakland's hopes of triumph.Led by running back LaMont Jordan, who4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
finished the game with 159 rushing yards, the Raiders orchestrated a 39-yard drive that gave kicker Sebastian Janikowski a 52-yard, game-winning field goal attempt in overtime. The snap came, punter Shane Lechler held and Janikowski booted a perfect ball through the uprights. The game was seemingly over. In head coach Lane Kiffin's head his team had won, 23-20. The 32-year-old took off his headset and began to run onto the field.Along the opposite sidelines, though, Denver head coach Mike Shanahan was busy calling a timeout. The timeout was called so late that by the time the whistle was blown, Janikowski had already kicked the ball.Unfortunately for the Raiders, that was early enough. On the next attempt, Janikowski missed an identical kick off the left upright, and the Broncos would go on to drive 54 yards downfield to set up a Jason Elam's game-winning field goal, a 23-yarder.Had the strong-legged Janikowski made two in a row, Oakland would have left Week 2 atop the AFC West division, despite an almost nonexistent passing game.In spite of injuries to his right index finger and right foot, 28-year-old Josh McCown was given the nod over fan favorite Daunte Culpepper. On the day, the move proved to be a rather questionable one. McCown threw for just 73 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions on the game, and he had just 12 passing yards going into halftime. After two quarters, Oakland had a meager five completions and three points.Had it not been for Jordan and the defense, Oakland might have finished all four quarters with just three points.Jordan's 159 ground yards accounted for over 60 percent of the Raiders' total offense. In overtime, the 230-pounder gained 37 of the team's 39 yards that led to Janikowski's game-winning attempt. On the other side of the ball, Oakland's defense also chipped in, adding eight points of its own to the scoreboard.Ex-Broncos defensive tackle Gerard Warren sacked quarterback Jay Cutler in the end zone, contributing the Raiders' first two points of the fourth quarter. Five minutes and 15 seconds later, linebacker Thomas Howard picked off Cutler's pass and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown.Howard also finished the game with a team-leading 10 tackles, in front of free safety Stuart Schweigert, who had nine, and DT Tommy Kelly's seven. Linebacker Kirk Morrison also snagged an interception early in the second quarter, his second in two games.Oakland will head back home next week to meet with the 1-1 Cleveland Browns.Raiders' Week 2 studs:3. Kirk Morrison: At this pace (17 tackles, two interceptions and four passes defensed in two weeks), Morrison will be headed to his first Pro Bowl. 2. Thomas 43 Polamalu white jersey
Howard: Recorded 10 total tackles, one interception and one defensive TD.1. LaMont Jordan: Jordan now has 318 total yards through just two games. Raiders' Week 2 duds:3. Lane Kiffin: It appears the young coach has a bright NFL career ahead, but starting an injured McCown over a healthy Culpepper just doesn't appear logical. 2. The secondary: The performance wasn't as bad as last week's, but Oakland allowed 269 passing yards and couldn't tackle with any success.1. Josh McCown: Three interceptions, two fumbles (one lost) and just 73 passing yards won't win you many games in the NFL.

Jerry Porter

Since Porter was selected in the second round of the 2000 draft, he has shown that he can make it in the NFL. Furthermore, he has shown that he can be great in the NFL. But only at certain times. Between these short flashes of greatness, however, he is simply silent; and sometimes he remains in this dormant stage for quarters and even games at a time. The 2006 season will be the time for Porter to close this chapter on his career and begin a new one: a chapter of consistency.Don't get me wrong, Porter can be a first-rate wideout and can even be dominating at times. But not all the time. Just for this reason, he has fallen short of the coveted 1,000-yard mark for a second straight season. In 2004, Porter posted his best career marks, hauling in 64 passes for 998 yards and nine touchdowns. Once again, good, but not the cream of the crop. The following season was expected to be a colossal year for the West Virginia alumni for the sole reason that now he would be working alongside Randy Moss. Once again, he fell short of expectations-catching 76 passes for 942 yards and five touchdowns. To better understand Porter's Achilles heel, however, you need to move beyond the seasonal statistics and more towards his individual game numbers. As a whole, 942 yards looks fairly respectable for a second wide receiver on the depth chart. But, as you look at his numbers with a game-by-game perspective, they seem to become smaller and far less reputable. In the first seven weeks of the 2005 campaign, Porter's highest yardage total came in a week two loss at Kansas City, when he caught five passes for just 68 yards. To make matters worse, he also went without a touchdown in each of those weeks. Finally, in week eight, Porter showed why the Raiders baited him in with a five-year, $20 million contract prior to the 2005 season. He posted a two-touchdown, 123-yard game against Tennessee that resulted in Oakland's third win of the season. Then, for the following two weeks, the 6'2" wide receiver went back down to average, at best-with games of 68 and 27 yards. Week 11 was one final resurrection for number 84. In a 16-13 win at Washington, Porter hauled in six passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. The remaining yardage totals thereafter were, well, just about average: 57, 50, 36, 31, 29, and 76 yards. If you plotted Porter's 2005 numbers on a graph, it would closely resemble two witches' hats placed side by side: A steady horizontal line at about 59 yards, a sudden 123-yard peak, and then another long horizontal stretch around 59 yards. After that, the line would shoot up once more at 142-yards and then finally resurface to mediocrity. In the only two games that Jerry Porter amassed over 100 yards last season, Oakland came out on top. So if the are looking to improve on their four-win 2005 season, Porter will have to step up on a more regular basis in 2006. With a mobile Aaron Brooks behind center and a healthy Randy Moss, anticipate for him to improve somewhere close to the 2005 numbers of Dolphins' wide receiver Chris Chambers. In 2005, Chambers posted 82 receptions for 1,118 yards and nine touchdowns. As opposed to Porter's 58.88-yard per game average in 2005, this means he would have to raise that median to 69.88 yards per game in 2006. He would also have to raise his touchdown total to from five to 11. However, fans know just how capable Porter is at achieving this, as he has already posted two nine-touchdown seasons in his career.Everyone is aware: Jerry Porter is quick, he is physical, and he can change a game.

The Guy for the Hall of Fame

You'd think that anyone who made the NFL's much-ballyhooed 75th Anniversary Team back in 1994 (not to mention the Super Bowl Silver Anniversary Team of 1990, the league's All-1970s team, and the officially chosen AFL-NFL 1960-1984 All-Star Team) would be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, right?Except all-time punter Ray Guy has never made the trip to Canton and into the hallowed halls; the former Oakland Raider added to his long list of 2010 pro bowl 4 Brett Favre Blue jersey
career achievements the status of first "pure punter" ever nominated for the Hall of Fame back in 1992. The committee again selected Guy for the short list in 1995, '97, '99, 2002 and last year.(The voting process for the football Hall appears more eccentric than any process this side of the Electoral College at times; so player X is worthy of a nomination in 2002, but not in 2003? What happened in that time span? Did his history actually get worse a year or did it just appear worse? Are back-to-back nods, as in Guy's case, a good thing or a bad thing?)In any event, Guy is back on the list of the sweet 17, among a class that pundits feel certain will be headed up by Cris Carter and Darrell Green. So why not Guy? The list of his achievements is Digglerian impressively long and capped with the glitter of three Super Bowl rings. Guy was the first punter ever taken in the first round of the NFL draft (after leading the NCAA in punting yardage for Southern Mississippi), and he was named a Pro Bowler six consecutive seasons. (But wait - there's more! Much, much more at RayGuy.net!)Statistically speaking, some eye-poppers from Guy's bubblegum card include his 1,046 successful punts against just three blocks (a nice 99.71 percent success rate), his streak of 619 clean punts, and his games-played streak of 207 which neatly spanned his entire career. (Brett who?)Want a highlight clip to assemble for his Hall of Fame montage? Wikipedia nominates his work from Super Bowl XVIII, including his little chip shot in the second quarter: "When the Raiders offense faltered [at the Washington 39], Guy, known for his power, showed a great deal of finesse by booting a 27-yard punt that pinned Washington on their own 12-yard line." There's also the classic moment from the 1976 Pro Bowl game. In the Superdome in New Orleans, Guy managed to nail some television equipment suspended from the roof. In the editing room, this writer would include his three swipes in Super Bowl XV, nearly identical 40-something-yard shots that pinned the Eagles back deep every time. Throw in his longest boot of 74 yards back in that glorious season of 1977 when Guy was called upon for a career-low 59 times and one from his last game with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1986: Ray Guy highlight reel. Finally, there's the sheer gee-whiz factor. Guy has a collegiate award named after him. At least one source (albeit a more-than-slightly biased one) attributes the creation of 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
the phrase "hang time" to Guy's existence. All jokes and sycophancy aside, despite the fact that a punter's career often spans two decades, how many have become as well-known as Ray Guy? (To wit: Who knew who 20-year vet Jeff Feagles was before, say, Monday?)Currently, there are exactly zero punters on the Hall of Fame roll. Electors could do a heck of a lot worse than to put in an all-time Oakland Raider great.Punting on fourth-and-long throughout the year at
